…Words burned into Chase’s retina, a ghostly echo of what was. Words that fade away as his heart pounds in his chest and sweat drenches his forehead.

“Sorry I couldn’t be more use, dear, I never did understand computers, curious objects if you ask me. And I’m quite sure that this one must be an antique by now!”

“What?” Chase blinked, his head was fuzzy and discombobulated, it felt as though he was waking from a dream.

“Don’t say what, dear, say pardon.”

The world took form and shape around Chase; Mrs Crisp was staring at him blankly. The room was different, too, the corridor with its creaky floor and tasselled wall lights had gone and there was no sign of the praxinoscope. He was standing in the middle of a large room filled with shelves of musty-smelling books, each wrapped in a wrinkled plastic dust cover and tagged with a number. An ancient computer sat on a beige steel trolley in one corner, a single red light blinking away on its equally beige casing. Next to it lay a pile of dusty old floppy discs and an antiquated printer.

Chase became dimly aware that he was holding something and opened his hand to find he was clutching a strip of old-fashioned printer paper with a single sentence etched on its faint green lines…

“When time is a sword, let this be your shield.”
